If you were to cross God of War and Guitar Hero, Brutal Legend is what you would get. A gaming experience like no one that I can recently remember of. Jack Blacks venture into gaming is a successful one and gamers can easily see why.
You play the role of Jack Black, known as the ex-roadie Eddie Riggs that is taken back to an ancient world to battle the likes of demons unknown to mankind. With the help up of his guitar and other weapons he can hack and slash through various heavy metal themed lands and also play some wicked chords as you progress through the game.
An axe to the face never fails friends!
The games story and voice acting is done superbly and compliments the games visuals perfectly. There’s also nothing here to bash about the games originality and out of the box thinking. At times I felt, like Jack Black was right there saying, “why don’t we put this in the game!”. I really never knew what was going happen next during the game. And that felt good.
Controls and combos are easy to grasp. Music is solid and doesn’t disappoint. Online play is fun for a few minutes, however it’s the first player mode that this game was built for. It’s a complete story starring Jack Black that’s engaging and does really have you pay attention to the cut scenes. Usually I tend to skip over them, in this case I found myself watching all of them. Music is also DEAD on. Heavy metal to the fullest. Great tracks, enough said.
Oh great, who brought the gargoyle?
The game does have some frustrations and at times when I was fighting some of the demons I did feel a little like I was going through the motions. The camera view also was a bit frustrating but didn’t draw away from the game especially during the boss fights. I like the fact that I really never got lost even though the world did seem massive.
Though I can’t recommend spending $60 on this game, I do recommend it if it ever drops below $30. I think the game sits well at $29.99. It’s a well worth experience at that price. I’ll tell you it’s not “game of the year” as IGN has been quoted.
Did I forget to mention the game was released by Electronic Arts? Credit goes to them for taking a chance with this title. Seems like they’re still willing to take some chances with some innovative titles.
