Bungie has really been working hard to bring us all the goods from previous Halo titles from great multiplayer maps to the engaging story in single player.
Now here we are with Halo 3: ODST which will most likely only tickle the hardcore fan. This can be both disappointing and good for either side since there are plenty of good things that were kept right and others that made you feel you were still playing Halo 2.
You will notice that Masterchief and all of his godly dual wielding and solo attitude are missing in action in this new title. Like we stated in our preview of Halo 3: ODST you play as the rookie and is sent in drop pods with the rest of your group. You wake up from being unconscious at night after your squad members have gone through hell fighting and outrunning the convanent. The story unravels with a lot of suspense. This is where I will say is probably the strongest point for Halo 3: ODST. The story builds up well and keeps the suspense high as you progress through the game. You really start becoming attached to each squad member as each has their own personalities. I really didn’t get any of this from Halo 3 instead it felt more like going through the motions type of deal.
Battle is kept pretty much the same. You will find all the previous guns from Halo 3 here at your disposal when your making your way through the city. All the events take place during Halo 2 so you will recognize the small pistol with the scope that all the fans have come to love. This is not to mention the silencer at the tip to complement this throwback pistol as well with the SMG. I had a couple of moments where I was looking to dual wield but kept forgetting that I was cut short this time around. The AI on the covanent is still pretty solid. I love a good challenge especially in a co-op battle so I will always crank it up to Legendary to make sure I get the true Halo feel. Since the original Halo co-op campaign it has always been fun but now they have added Firefight so you and three other friends can take on groups and groups of Convanent. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? It should because if you have played Gears of War 2 you will find it very familiar. I don’t find it surprising, gamers love the survival feel yet, it isn’t very original and I would rather just pop Gears of war 2.
Playing as the rookie you find yourself in a very stealthy type of environment since you are running through the city at night. The visor allows you to see enemies much easier with highlighters around them(allies in green and enemies in red). Once reaching certain checkpoints where your squad mates had been last you can see and play through their story. So basically in between the real action your playing detective trying to relocate with the squad. Bungie has a way of making the battles and night fighting fit well with the music as well with every situation.
This is a two disc game which will make one think it means double the fun. But really online battles are still Halo 3 style. So don’t expect to find any of the guns or visor set up in multiplayer. One cool thing is the Recon armor can finally be unlocked through online or offline achievements. Similar with finding or turning the skulls off or on for a more interesting gameplay, you can find this all here. You can really start to see how this would only really be for the hardcore fans.
So now with Bungie’s all heavy weight Masterchief to get the fans going crazy we had to really think about the rating for Halo: ODST. There are several of games developers pushing and raising the bar with every new title they release. This is because there giving a fresh new way to play or think in a game. Giving off a unique feel. This is what we need to expect from every game to come. Regardless if its new material or it is a sequel like Halo: ODST. We are playing now on our next gen consoles that we had eagerly been awaiting for. I expect a sequel like this from a big name company to be mediocre in a previous gen. In all honesty I think the fans could have waited for Halo Reach which is a title I am personally excited for but if Bungie is really going to push content like this I am really afraid for what is to come. Yes this started out as just a small update to keep the fans connected but if your developing a game and decide to take it all the way you should have something good for your fans at full price. Here, I feel you like you cut them a little short Bungie. If your not a fan you can wait, other titles like Left 4 Dead 2 or Modern Warfare 2 might be worth your cash.
