Having extraordinary powers and strength comes at a cost and for Alex Mercer, memory loss. Prototype takes you from roof top to roof top killing and demolishing everything in your path. With small stealth missions in the middle of blood bath’s and fluid cinematic cut scenes the story stays fresh and keeps you going with tons of action that will make you hold on to your controller for more. Controller set up is kept real simple and does not take more than a couple of minutes to start dishing out insanely strong abilities. This made for a good action packed first level I could not deny.

Would you like to see how hard I can punch?
Now a game that starts of with tons of action is always a good thing. With in a matter of seconds you are running through a havoc filled street with tall buildings, skyscrapers, and civilians infected with something strange and viral, making them very hostile. I am a huge fan of zombies so all of this did set a great feeling of kill, kill, and KILL. Several different combos are at your disposal with every new form Alex can take on. Whether it is using the different powers such as “Blade” or “Claws” you will find and enjoy many ways to decapitate your enemy. Take my word for it…you will be doing this a lot and the crazy thing is you will not get bored from it especially seeing the amount of gore unleashed.

Protoype has an ability system that is very simple. As you make your ways through each level you encounter different enemies and crucial yet short objectives to complete. Depending on how well you complete each and how fast you can make your way through the objectives at hand make for added Evolution points. Now the faster you can do all of this make for more points. This can be crucial since you will be able to purchase more abilities from the upgrade list and be prepared for boss battles and the massive amounts of enemies the game throws at you. Being prepared and having certain ones at your disposal are great not only for battle but also escaping it. Even with the amount of strength you have the amount of enemies can become over whelming and make your health bar go from full to almost depleted real fast.
Encountering different characters through the story unveils things a bit more for Alex, this is his only way of figuring out who he is and what has happened to his body. Consuming several different enemies along the way also allows for more cut scenes where Alex can actually go through the different memories of the brain. Piece by piece everything will come together. You really have to love that the story does not interfere with the game in anything but a negative way. Fun lies with jumping and running up buildings. I know in plenty of Marvel Comic video games we see this and how realistic they can get the city to be. Yet it is still fun and the extra abilities you purchase make it easier to maneuver through and under bridges, gliding from rooftop to roof top, or just dashing over cars straight to your objective.

Prototype has a simple aspect going for it. Makes for an easy to pick up type of game which many of us can appreciate it. Although stealth missions are far to easy and seem to have not been giving much thought. Alex Mercer should have been given a bit more combo’s or at least combo switch up where we can connect different ones and make the playing style our own. Visuals are fairly solid but you still cant help but notice the backdrop you just won’t ever be able to encounter. AI really doesn’t have much of a brain but the odds you find yourself against in every fight as you proceed make up for the challenging part. This game has plenty of potential and even though this wasn’t the game we thought it was going to be it still surprised us to be a decent title. If Activision and Radical Entertainment improve certain area’s I don’t see why we won’t see a Prototype 2 that will have some addictive qualities.
