Top 10 Things to Know About OnLive

OnLive is changing gaming as we know it. So get in, shut up and hang on. OnLive is a new gaming platform that will change how you play games. Not only will it change it but will redefine gaming. By connecting to OnLive with your TV, PC or Mac you’ll be easily be able to start a game. Because the games run on OnLive servers (cloud computing), you will effectively be streaming your game. According to OnLive, “OnLive connects you to game servers through the Internet, instantly sending your controller actions upstream and the results back downstream at blinding fast speeds.”

Since the beginning of time if you had a Nintendo you simply played Nintendo games. If you had a PS3 and you played PS3 games. Same for the PC and so on. This is the way it has been since the evolution of platform and PC gaming. It’s what we know and what we’ve been accustomed to. Not anymore. With OnLive, you’ll have direct access to some of the best titles that gaming has to offer.

They’ve already listed some listed some big release titles. Game titles isn’t OnLive’s difference maker however. It’s the fact that you will not have to worry whether the game is out on PC, Xbox 360 or PS3. What you will have to worry is if the game is available for play on OnLive. It’s yet to be determined exactly how many publishers have signed on but they’re initial screenshots and announcements show the likes of 2K’s Bioshock and Tombraider. This is a great start but in order to get respect it’s going to have to take it a step further and get some of the must haves on all platforms. I’m talking about Call of Duty, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Left for Dead, CounterStrike, Super Mario and Gears of War.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great idea but I think without a killer game lineup OnLive won’t work. Beyond that, I think Xbox 360 and the PC currently have a strangehold on online gaming. It’ll take more than a smart idea to win gamers over.

Game profile looks informative and slick. Can't wait to see it in action.

Initial videos looks like OnLive will provide a seamless experience. God help them if there’s any lag. Serious gamers will have none of that. They are currently in beta and have  a planned launch in Winter of 2009.  The screenshots of their online service, similar to Xbox live looks really good. I have my doubts about how fluid it will really be.
