Have you ever imagined how it would be to have your favorite Nintendo characters clash it out? Dream no more, Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii features an array of old and new school Nintendo characters.
From Mario to Pikachu this new installment will deliver what Smash Bros. has done well their last past two titles, which is FUN. No matter which player you choose each has its own Final Smash. Final smash allows each player(depending on the winner of destroying the floating rainbow ball) to unleash a devastating final attack which literally will consume the screen and makes your unique attack turn the tides in your favor. This goes without saying this will make you want to play as each character at least a couple of times to experiment with what suits you best.
Combo’s and dodging are still a big factor for winning in Brawl as it was in the previous titles. If not careful you may find yourself squinting and sometimes in a complete panic, trying to locate your player. This doesn’t happen often with 1 vs 1 battles as you are able to take in the crisp graphics and lush explosions from special attacks. Items have always given the previous Smash Bro’s titles some flavor. All and newly added items are here for your smashing needs. Boxes and recovery items will still turn battles in your favor along with unique armor sets(obtaining full sets of armor during battle make wonders for your character).
Level design…now as if there wasn’t enough to say about this game. This is an area Nintendo really doesn’t get much credit for. Every level is quiet unique and never sits still for repetitious play. Old characters from previous Nintendo titles are found spontaneously through out themed levels. Many which change backgrounds and make jumping from platform to platform the only way to endure time limits or survival modes. Team and solo battles come with many surprises and random counter battles in between. This way your able to unlock different hidden characters such as Sonic or Solid Snake(pretty neat).
I took the time to use each controller setting Smash Bro’s Brawl allows you to play with. The GameCube controller set up was nice, friendly, and allowed me to jump right in. All you previous Smash Bro owners will find this to be a good thing. I personally hate getting use to yet another controller device with a totally different setting. Classic Controller, ok nothing gets more old school than this. Can anyone say Super NES? Nintendo finds a way to make you feel right at home with this controller and works great with Smash Bro’s. Wii remote (held sideways) was a bit annoying. I literally felt like I was holding a rectangle block. Than dealing with the small buttons made it feel more flimsy than anything. The most fun I have had playing Smash Bro’s was with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. This set up was a bit more challenging to play with but was far more fun and interesting. Using the Nunchuk to throw items and perform smashing attacks on opponents felt new but all the while I felt sucked into the game.
Tired of owning the computer over and over again? Wi-fi connection allows you to play with distant friends or family. As if the game doesn’t have enough replay value. I think many fans of the Super Smash Bros. titles would have been pretty disappointed if internet play was not available this time around. Stickers and trophies are still available to you if used to buy with efficient amount of coins. Stage Builder which in my opinion is worth an extra lucky star. This was a good way to go for Nintendo as a lot of us wish Little Planet was released for Wii. Being able to create and save levels anyway you want makes for limitless imagination and play time. If you were in awe at the amount of fun you have playing team and solo battles against Link or Samus you probably won’t really pay much attention to the extra’s yet, it is still nice its all there.
I am one to hate sequel titles that game developers spit out just to milk out what money they can get from titles. Especially at the cost of well known game characters and franchises we all know and love from when most of us were little. Nintendo has proven to us from day one that they have been true to their roots. Making each title refreshing and adding something new whether it was new characters or small change in level schemes they manage to give us what Microsoft and Sony still strive to do. If you own a Wii or in the past have own the Nintendo 64 or Gamecube. You know as well as I do this isn’t a title you look over. This is yet another title and reason to go out and buy a Wii.
