Odin Sphere and now Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Vanillaware has been able to deliver yet another title with great gameplay and beautiful artistic graphics. This is just one of those titles that you remember for its unique experience. With a nice touch of RPG element there are a couple of things that will call you back to this game for more and more than just a hack N slash feel.

Playing “Muramasa: The Demon Blade” I was soon overwhelmed with the breathtaking back rounds and music that fit so well during battle. Controls are kept real simple and for a game like this you won’t have to be scared of jerking the Wii controls around since motion will have no effect. As a matter a fact if you have your Gamecube control laying around, plug it in and give it a go! Once you start the game you are able to choose from either Kisuke or Momohime to complete the story. Choosing one or the other you will have an alternate path and endings which adds greatly to this title.

Battle is very fast pace and getting comfortable with your attacks and easily performed combo’s is a must for winning. If you are not skilled at fast paste hack N slash I recommend choosing the easier difficulty(only two types to choose from) as the more skilled one is actually…much harder. Progressing through the game more blades are available either through forging weapons or obtaining them by defeating more difficult boss encounters. Other items such as special accessories may be equip, helping you with several different stat boosts to give you that extra needed edge. Shops are spread out through out the maps. Allowing for item purchasing and eating to restore health.
Having your health bar(candle) full as you possibly can will help keep the health of your blade to the maximum. You are allowed to carry three different blades at all times since using your special attacks(each blade has its own) or even blocking will in time deplete the bar leaving your blade to break. This is where the strategy kicks in and makes battles challenging, juggling from sword to sword and taking no damage at all is crucial to winning. Luckily switching your broken one off will replenish the bar and finally will be able for use again. This doesn’t take long but you will want to try to switch before it breaks as healing the blade that is broken is much harder than the one with low health. Roads are all set in 2-D, yet there are many different areas that can be explored such as hidden rooms with 100 man challenges and special items. There are also plenty of achievements to unlock as you fight your way to both endings, such as to unlock a special difficulty mode that allows you to play the game once more with only 1 hp.

Vanillaware proves again that video games are truly an art form, that they just so happen to do so well. Wii owners should be very proud and excited that there is still room for titles such as these. I had a great time playing this game and even after being finished with it I can’t help but hope games with art such as this one are going to evolve into something more unique for our current consoles or even future ones. Something fresh, new, and original. Simple and brings you right into the action. Wii owners rejoice, celebrate, and do support this title…you will have fun.
