Patience. It’s one of the qualities that I lack. However, when playing a good RPG I always go in knowing that it’ll take some time to level up and get into some good RPG gameplay.
The Chronicles of Inotia on the iPhone tests my limits, to say the least. From the outset, whether you’re playing on the normal or hard difficulty setting it’s extremely challenging to battle with the what look to be gum drops.
In the initial hour of gameplay, I found myself battling and running for most of the time. It’s very easy to get surrounded by other gum drops and get your character’s face beat in. Beyond that, you’ll encounter other enemies that simply seem at a much greater level than you. You’ll find yourself most of the time leveling on lesser powerful characters that doesn’t make the game much fun. The beginning of the game really feels like a hassle and I began to lose interest within the first few hours.
The initial movie had me pumped. It was all for nothing.
The initial shops where you can buy an array of potions, armor and weapons charge you an arm and a leg. It’s virtually impossible to buy any of these from the outset. Ex. An steel armor vest costs about 3600 gold pieces. A enemy usually drops around 10-20 gold pieces. I’ll leave it to you to do the math.
Watch out, these guys will rob you blind! 3200 gold pieces for a jacket! WTF!
Gameplay is pretty smooth and you should be able to jump right into it without any difficulties. The challenge is in having patience battling gum drops, foxes, bees and I think I killed a hedgehog for the first few hours of gameplay. It annoyed me but could be suited for those that enjoy leveling up while you’re on the can.
4 hours into gameplay, I felt let down. Eh...boring.
You are able to build up your character and develop skills such as a Fatal Strike and a Power Slash but it didn’t seem like quite enough at times. The fun would be in buying new weapons and armor which is completely out of reach during the first few hours of gameplay. Note to Com2Us: make games enjoyable from the get go, don’t make us play five hours just to be able to get our first armor or new weapon.
For those hardcore RPG gamers, those that are looking for one on an iPhone I suggest don’t waste your time or money on this one. The genre is still developing for the iPhone and I’m sure more than a few hits will be coming our way on the iPhone and iTouch.
Chronicles of Inotia is currently priced under a dollar. It’s not too much of a risk to give it a chance. However, you’re time can be spent playing other iPhone games.
