Alive 4 Ever – iPhone Game Review

I want my 99 cents back. Ok, I won’t go that far but Alive 4 Ever is really frustrating. I commend Meridian Digital for attempting to make a two-stick shooter game for the iPhone/iTouch, but there is one major problem with the game. The difficulty setting right off the bat will turn most casual gamers away in an instant.
If you remember Loaded on the original Playstation you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the similarity. The sound and graphics are some of the best I’ve heard come out of an iPhone game. The sound is just plain creepy and if the game was a tad bit easier (note the sarcasm) the sound would help immerse you into a solid gaming experience. However, that isn’t the case and you’re left with a game that is almost a good one with just one major flaw.
The character building aspect of the game, injects a great RPG aspect as Alive 4 Ever allows you to build your character and acquire new weapons and abilities as you progress through the game. You also have the ability to host a game of up to four players on separate iPhones. Stages are neat if you’re able to get through the first few ones. I found myself playing the first couple of levels over and over again to improve my characters ability. This is something that I don’t want to do on an iPhone game. Yet, I found myself having to do this in order to beat some of the tougher enemies in the later stages. As mentioned, the game jumps in difficulty quite quickly and will frustrate you.
The process to pick up gold and rescue enemies is frustrating. It’s a ton of back an forth that gets tiring very quickly. It’s fun gunning through enemies but if you get surrounded and over taken, you’re pretty much dead and have to restart the level. I also don’t see the point of having a ton of HP if as soon as you get surrounded, you’re dead. It just takes you longer to watch your character to get eaten up. Some of these game developers baffle me.
If you have the patience, you will be happy to know that the game has over 30 levels and is supplemented by a handful of new weapons and abilities. The multiplayer aspect is a plus but if you’re on your own, you will get owned. Alive 4 Ever? I think not. Good luck.
